Writing Tutoring
ABOUT
I believe academic learning flourishes when social learning is integrated into the curriculum. As a former Philadelphia public school English teacher, I’m called to help students (grades 5 through 8 as well as high school students) develop as whole people: academically, socially, and ethically.
I also believe children learn and grow best in environments where:
their psychological needs are met
they feel physically and emotionally safe
they feel like they belong
they have a sense of themselves as autonomous and capable people
Through compassionate and engaging in-person or online tutoring, I help young people develop as caring, collaborative people AND gain confidence on the written page, through all stages of the writing process:
Topic brainstorming
Thesis development
Strategies of analysis and argument
Essay structure and organization
Paragraph construction
Research
Documentation
Sentence structure
Grammar and mechanics
As your child’s tutor, I draw from the Common Core Standards to inform our learning plan. The Common Core is an educational initiative from 2010 that details what K–12 students throughout the United States should know in English language arts. Aligned with these standards, I help students:
draft, research, revise, discuss, proofread, and publish writing in narrative, informative/explanatory, and opinion genres
generate fresh writing ideas on their own
draw opinions from written texts to support opinions
strengthen conventions of grammar
have generative conversations about literature and the writing process
focus on social skills like speaking clearly, listening to others, and asking questions about other’s writing
I also provide in-person and online college essay tutoring and SAT Writing tutoring to high school juniors and seniors.
Together, we’ll work in-person or remotely to assess current writing strengths/places for improvement, identify specific writing goals, collaboratively complete assignments from a student’s coursework, and have fun along the way!
To book a free consultation, first you’ll need to complete my New Client Application Form by clicking the APPLY HERE button at the top of this page. I’ll be in contact with you within 48 hours of form submission. If you have any questions in the meantime, email me at sojourner.ahebee@gmail.com.

BIO
Hi there, my name is Sojourner Ahebee! I’m a published writer and former journalist with an enthusiasm for sharing my love of writing with students of all ages. A graduate of Stanford University, I have a Bachelor of Arts in comparative literature and African-American Studies. Here are some fun facts about me:
I was born in Cote d’Ivoire, West Africa and grew up speaking French in my early home and school settings.
I am a former Philadelphia public school English and Social Studies teacher! I worked with 6th grade students from diverse language traditions, including Spanish, French, Arabic, and Telugu.
For close to five years, I worked as national education and health equity reporter at WHYY and later MSNBC, bringing the stories of ethnic communities to the fore.
During college, I studied abroad in Paris, France and and Cape Town, South Africa!
In 2013, I was selected by former first Lady, Michelle Obama, and the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards to become one of 5 National Student Poets. For the entirety of my senior year in high school, I conducted a service project in which I brought poetry workshops to underserved communities across the country.
If you’re ever in West Philly, check out my poem that was commissioned by Mural Arts Philadelphia on a public mural that celebrates the rich tradition of urban gardens and fresh food in neighborhoods battling food deserts.
My debut picture book is forthcoming from Scholastic in 2025.
